It goes without saying that there are many great places to eat and drink in Park City, Utah. This popular travel destination bustles in winter and summer, with ski bums and outdoor adventure seekers finding lots of fun things to do. One of the best restaurants, is also a distillery, with award-wining whiskey make on site and excellent food to accompany it. The High West Distillery & Saloon is, in my opinion, the best new restaurant in Park City.
The High West Distillery & Saloon bills itself as the world’s only ski-in gastro-distillery. Now, the original High West was Utah’s first distillery, founded in the 1870′s in Old town Park City. In as such, the building is listed on the Register of Historic Places, and the rehabilitation /refurbishment of the building was completed with utmost care and respect of its historic importance. Today, High West is open continuously from 11:30 AM through dinner ending at 10:30 PM. While children are allowed here, remember — it’s a distillery. No children may sit at the bar, so families can enjoy their lunch or dinner upstairs or in one of the private rooms. Despite
this, there’s a lot that is family-friendly about this restaurant, including a children’s menu. Adults enjoying a meal at High West Distillery & Saloon should try one of the small batch spirits here. The Rendezvous Rye scored an impressive 95 points by Malt Advocate and was named one of the “Best New Whiskies of 2008.”
The meals here are good-sized portions of mostly American – specifically, Western - food. Some of the small plates that are recommended here include the 5 Swiss Cheese Fondue, the Parmesan and Herb Dusted Fries, and the Bourbon Onion Soup. The Whiskey Cider Braised Short Rib and Apple Wood Hot House Salmon are both terrific for larger meals, and will give enough energy for someone taking ski lessons in Park City to go for the rest of the day! Ask the waitstaff for recommendations regarding whiskey and food pairings; just like wine, some whiskeys can really complement and enhance the flavor of certain dishes. Since the predominant notes in most whiskies are vanilla and caramel, hearty (meaty) entrees pair the best with them.
My friends and I went on a tour of the High West Distillery & Saloon: This was a real highlight of our trip to Park City, Utah. The tours are fun and educational, and guests learn all about the distilling process. The 250 gallon copper pot in action is fun to see! A meal and tour at the High West Distillery & Saloon is absolutely recommended during a Park City vacation.
